Transracial Adoption: Preparing for Realities, Building for Belonging

Full Circle is sponsoring a virtual workshop for adoptive and prospective adoptive parents presented by Alisa DeLage, a former Full Circle parent. See below for Alisa’s biography. This training is offered for $25 per family and can count as two hours of education for your home study, if you are still working on that.

This workshop can help you think about the decision of whether to be open to a child of a different race than your own and how to navigate transracial adoption if you have decided on this openness. If you are already parenting transracially or transculturally, you may get some new ideas and inspiration.

Transracial adoption brings unique joys, responsibilities, and complexities that families may not fully anticipate at the beginning of their adoption journey. This training offers an honest, practical, and supportive conversation about what it means to parent across racial and cultural differences. Families will explore racial identity and belonging, building meaningful connections to culture and community, navigating conversations about race and racism, and recognizing the ways adoption and racial identity can intersect as children grow.

Alisa DeLage

Alisa DeLage is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and the Chief Programs Officer at Old Colony Elder Services, where she oversees a broad range of community-based health and human service programs. She is also the owner of Harmony Within, an outpatient psychotherapy practice specializing in infertility, pregnancy loss, grief, family-building and maternal mental health.

Alisa and her husband built their family through adoption and are white parents raising two Black sons. She brings to this training both her professional experience as a social worker and her lived experience as an adoptive parent navigating race, identity, belonging, and adoption alongside her children.
