Adoption Process

5 Step Adoption Process For Birth Mothers

1

Speak with an adoption worker

You will speak with an adoption worker to complete your intake, which includes learning why you are considering adoption, options counseling, gathering your family medical history, receiving your ID, and confirming your pregnancy through medical documentation. If you would like to be considered for financial help during the pregnancy and the postpartum period, we will ask about your financial situation. The adoption worker can help you with any of this.
2

Choose a family

You will review profiles of the waiting families and choose who you would like to interview, which might be just your first choice or it might be a couple of families. If you prefer to choose without speaking with them, that is okay too. If you are interviewing, it can be by telephone or video call. These calls are a chance for you to hear their voices and get a feel for the family to decide if they are a good fit for you. If you don’t see the family in the first grouping, we will search for the right family for you.
3

Create an adoption plan

After you choose an adoptive family, your adoption worker will learn from you if you would like an open or closed adoption, as well as other important questions regarding the adoption. We will hire an attorney for you, who will handle the legal aspects of the adoption.
4

Place the child with the adoptive parents

When the baby is ready for discharge from the hospital, he or she will be placed with the adoptive parents, who will go to a local hotel until all the legal aspects of the adoption are complete. If you want to visit with the baby and family after discharge, that is fine. After you have signed your legal papers and the adoptive parents have gotten permission to go home, they will travel back home with the baby. If you have decided that you want photos and updates of your baby, you will receive photos starting at discharge time, either by text or through an app.
5

Post Placement Support

After the baby is born, you will continue to receive the emotional and financial support that was arranged with your adoption worker. This continues for 6 to 8 weeks after the birth, depending on whether you had a vaginal or c-section delivery. If you would like a post-adoption counselor, we will help you find one. If you would like help in transition services of varying kinds, we will do our best to help you with this.

We work carefully with all adoptive families to make sure that they and their community and extended family are warm and welcoming so that the child’s experience is a positive one. Adoptive families adopting transracially are expected to be enthusiastic about transracial adoption, and are also expected to have looked at whether the child’s experience in their extended family and community will be one that will nurture and develop a positive sense of identity. Full Circle doesn’t discriminate on the basis of age, religion, race/national origin, sexual orientation or family form. If you have any other questions about eligibility, please ask us, we’re happy to help.

Yes. If you choose to make an adoption plan, the agency can provide allowable living expenses which can include rent, food, utilities, transportation, uninsured medical costs, maternity clothing, and other expenses. Laws vary from state to state so we can let you know what help you are eligible for in your state.

We have many families and types of families for you to choose from. We work carefully with adoptive families to make sure that they are safe and healthy families. They have had thorough background clearance checks and have had a thorough review of their lives so that we can assure you that they are loving and prepared to be parents. Most of our families are unable to have biological children and hope to have the opportunity to be parents. They have been thoroughly educated on adoption and raising adopted children.

Yes, you do. You can choose the family in several different ways: you may review the profiles of waiting families. If you would like, we can arrange for you to speak by phone or video call with the adoptive families who you want to consider. We follow your comfort level. You can then choose who you feel is the right family for you and your child. If you want help coming up with questions that you might ask the family to see if they’re right for you, we’re happy to help you with this planning.
